Basilea, Suiza
Swiss studio, based in Basel and Zurich, a world reference in the reuse of construction components. Their work K.118 on the Lagerplatz site in Winterthur, commissioned by the Stiftung Abendrot foundation, is the extension of building 118, built mostly with used materials: the load-bearing structure comes from a steel frame dismantled in Basel, and the windows and granite slabs come from an office building in Zurich. It achieved 70% reuse and a 60% reduction in CO₂ equivalent, and won the Global Holcim Award 2021 gold prize.
Why we chose it
Because they build entire buildings with demolition components, pushing the circular economy to the limit and measuring the CO₂ avoided.
