Asunción, Paraguay
Studio of Paraguayan architect Solano Benítez, based in Asunción (Paraguay), awarded the Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Biennale. His work explores the structural potential of local ceramic brick and unspecialised labour to create complex structures with modest materials. Projects such as the Teletón Rehabilitation Centre demonstrate how brick, minimal concrete and constructive ingenuity enable an expressive, economical architecture with low dependence on imported materials.
Why we chose it
Because, with the Golden Lion at Venice 2016, it has shown the enormous potential of local brick and modest labour as against high-footprint materials.
