Schlins, Austria
Austrian workshop based in Schlins (Vorarlberg) led by Martin Rauch, an international benchmark for rammed earth construction. Founded in 1999, it has completed more than a hundred projects worldwide and demonstrated that it's possible to build contemporary multi-storey buildings using earth as a load-bearing material, as in his own house in Schlins, built with architect Roger Boltshauser. He collaborated with Herzog & de Meuron on the Ricola Kräuterzentrum, one of the largest rammed earth buildings in Europe. His work positions raw earth as a structural material with very low embodied energy.
Why we chose it
Because it has turned rammed earth into a contemporary structural material with minimal embodied energy and full recyclability.
