Studio of architect David Salmela, based in Duluth (Minnesota, United States), recognised for a domestic timber architecture deeply linked to the Nordic landscape of the Great Lakes. His work employs local timber, sober forms of Scandinavian root and orientation and efficiency strategies adapted to the cold climate. Awarded numerous AIA prizes, he champions timber as the main material, durability and a low-impact architecture integrated into the natural surroundings.
Why we chose it
Because it builds in local timber with a Nordic sobriety adapted to the cold climate, making timber and durability the centre of its work.
