Internacional (Oslo)
For 35 years, architecture has been at the core of Snøhetta, often in combination with other disciplines. Our projects range from beehives to opera houses and large masterplans, with concepts born from careful consideration of the context and landscape in which they are situated. Architecture goes back to the very beginnings of Snøhetta, when we created a small architecture and landscape collective in Oslo. In 1989, we won our first major commission to revive the ancient library of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt. By integrating landscape and architecture, as well as art and interiors, this project became defining of Snøhetta's transdisciplinary approach, where disciplines work holistically to constitute a sum greater than their individual parts. Architecture as a positive force: From the outset, the United Nations sustainability report from the Brundtland Commission, Our Common Future, published in 1987, became an inspiration for building a positive future. Since then, we have continued to promote design and architecture as a positive force in the world. Today, we also connect habitats for both humans and non-humans with other considerations around sustainable materials, positive management of energy and water resources, carbon and emissions control, and waste control. Positive workplace guidelines for healthy working practices in construction and throughout the design process further strengthen this.
Why we chose it
Snøhetta is an international model of regenerative architecture, demonstrating that large-scale projects can be carbon-positive and naturally climate-controlled.
