Weiz, Austria
Austrian company, part of the veteran Styrian firm Lieb Bau Weiz, which develops light timber gridshell structures covered with straw bales rendered with clay and finished with wooden shingles. The STROHBOID system was created to reduce the high CO2 emissions of the construction sector: the timber structural elements are filled with straw bales and rendered with clay on both sides, resulting in enclosures that are diffusive, humidity-regulating, well insulated, durable and free from harmful substances. Compared with a standard building, it uses up to 90% less manufacturing energy.
Why we chose it
Because they combine timber structure, straw and clay in a construction system with very low embodied energy.
