The Advanced Architecture Group (AAG) is an interdisciplinary research group at IAAC that explores how creative, science-driven design can positively impact and transform the present and future of cities, buildings and public spaces. Based in Barcelona and operating worldwide, AAG investigates emerging Computation and Digital Fabrication technologies combined with scientific advances from the fields of Data Science, Biology, Materials Science, Ecology and Robotics. We develop research and innovative projects across three main areas of specialisation. Architecture and Digital Technologies: Implementing novel solutions for energy-efficient circular buildings and digital construction through new materials, digital twins, robotics and 3D printing. Architecture and Ecology: Improving biodiversity and ecological systems in cities and buildings through the implementation of nature-based solutions and co-design with living systems. Architecture and urban data: Developing novel solutions and tools for sustainable and inclusive urban planning through urban analysis, digital twins and technology-mediated participatory design processes. Our services include research and development of innovative architectural solutions and tools, design and fabrication consultancy, executive training and the curation of events and publications within our areas of specialisation. Our work includes 19 European and publicly funded projects since 2015, as well as a consolidated network of collaborating industrial and institutional partners.
Why we chose it
IAAC is a world reference at the intersection of architecture, technology and sustainability. Its focus on digital fabrication, biomaterials and 3D printing applied to ecological construction makes it a pioneering centre. The combination of applied research, cutting-edge education and real development projects (such as TOVA or Valldaura Labs) shows that it is possible to build more sustainably using advanced technology and local materials. Its location in Barcelona and its global reach make it especially relevant for the directory.
Services
Vision: To design and prototype the future of the built environment in harmony with nature, from Barcelona to the world. Mission: To connect education and research to transform ideas into real applications, developing material systems, construction products and innovative urban technologies. Values: Radical (rethinking traditional design practices), Cross-cutting (trans-scalar and transdisciplinary work), Responsive (rapid adaptation to a changing world), Regenerative (facing challenges with an ecological mindset).
