INFINITO Delicias

Comunidad de Madrid

Comprehensive refurbishment of a former metalworks in the Delicias neighbourhood of Madrid —a six-storey block on the street and two stacked halls at the back of the plot— into INFINITO Delicias, a civic cultural space of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation devoted to sustainable food and citizen art. 2,780 m² of offices, restaurant, studio kitchen, culinary lab, residence, rehearsal rooms, gardens, vegetable plots and a central courtyard; almost 40% is collective space open to the neighbourhood. The project keeps as much of the existing building as possible to make use of its embodied energy and builds with bio-based materials —local timber, cork, lime mortars— and recycled or low-impact materials, chosen from the life cycle analysis of each one. The east and west façades are rebuilt with a chestnut timber structure whose planted balconies and awnings act as a thermal buffer, and the route linking the spaces is a tempered zone: insulated but unheated. Heating and cooling are renewable —geothermal and air-source— with a photovoltaic field integrated into a rooftop pergola and the green roofs of the halls; an energy community with a neighbouring school and housing block is planned. A 15 m³ tank under the courtyard collects rainwater for irrigation, and gardens of native species reduce the urban heat island and shelter wildlife. In 2026 it has received, among others, the FAD Architecture Award, the COAM Award, the ALDES sustainability and decarbonisation award (Rebuild) and first prize at the CESUGA timber architecture awards for refurbishment.
