Vancouver-based (Canada) studio responsible for Brock Commons Tallwood House, a student residence for the University of British Columbia which, upon completion in 2017, was the tallest mass timber building in the world, at 18 storeys and 53 metres. The project, developed with advice from Hermann Kaufmann and engineering by Fast + Epp, stores over 1,700 tonnes of CO₂ and achieved LEED Gold certification. The studio has demonstrated the feasibility of timber at height and its lower footprint compared to concrete.
Why we chose it
Because Brock Commons was the tallest mass timber building in the world and proved the technical and carbon feasibility of building tall with timber.
