Studio founded in Stuttgart in 2017 by Florian Kaiser and Guobin Shen, recognised for their work with straw bales and earth. Their project Haus Hoinka, a semi-detached house in Pfaffenhofen, uses pressed straw bales in a timber frame with clay render as the thermal envelope for floors, roofs and walls, saving 95% of CO₂ compared with an equivalent conventional construction. The project received the House of the Year 2023 award and the AR House Award 2024, integrating straw construction into a contemporary architectural language.
Why we chose it
Because they elevate construction with straw, timber and clay into an award-winning contemporary architecture, with 95% less CO₂.
