Lacaton & Vassal

París, Francia

Parisian studio founded by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, awarded the 2021 Pritzker Prize for their ability to transform and improve social housing under the precept "never demolish". Their emblematic work is the transformation of the three blocks of Grand Parc in Bordeaux (530 homes), where they replaced the façades with four-metre winter gardens without displacing tenants or raising the rent. Their philosophy—doing more with what already exists—turns the conservation and extension of the existing building stock into a powerful decarbonisation strategy.
