The Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU) is the German operator of an environmental product declaration (EPD) programme for construction materials. Together with the German Ministry of Housing, it manages Okobaudat, the reference public database with environmental impact data for construction products used in life cycle assessments and certifications in Germany and beyond. This matters for decarbonising construction because without reliable and harmonised environmental data it is not possible to calculate or reduce the embodied carbon of buildings.
