Muyinga, Burundi
Children's library in Muyinga (Burundi), completed in 2012 as the first piece of a future inclusive school for deaf children. BC Architects built it with compressed earth blocks produced on-site using manual presses, rhythmic buttress-columns every 1.3 metres, a wide-eaved roof to protect the raw earth, and local ceramic tiles. The participatory process, based on two months of studying Burundian vernacular architecture, transferred construction knowledge to the community. A landmark work of the new African earth architecture.
