Zayas de Báscones (Soria), España
Winery in Zayas de Báscones (Soria) designed by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos to produce quality wine and protect native grape varieties at risk of disappearing. Its walls are raised with hempcrete blocks, a biocomposite of hemp, lime and water, arranged in curved geometries that gain structural inertia beneath a light metal roof; the whole is unified with a continuous natural cork render. The great thermal stability of hemp-lime reduces, and even eliminates, the mechanical climate control that wine ageing requires.
