Gratallops (Tarragona), España
Urban winery in Gratallops (Priorat, Tarragona) designed by Harquitectes and completed in 2019, awarded the Mendelsohn Award. Its massive ceramic walls form a passive system of thermal inertia, ventilation and evaporative cooling that keeps the temperature and humidity of the fermentation room stable with practically no mechanical air conditioning. The intensive use of a simple ceramic material and the drastic reduction of building services cut both the embodied carbon and the operational consumption of a programme that is usually very energy-intensive.
