Children Village

Formoso do Araguaia, Brasil

Residences for 540 students at the Canuanã rural school, in Formoso do Araguaia (Tocantins, Brazil), winners of the RIBA International Prize 2018 for the best building in the world. Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum combined a large laminated timber roof on timber columns, which shades and ventilates the courtyards, with walls and lattices of raw earth blocks handmade on site, chosen for their thermal behaviour. Designed with the teenagers themselves, it brings together timber industrialisation and local building knowledge with a minimal carbon footprint.
