Gando, Burkina Faso
Francis Kéré's first building, constructed in 2001 in his home village of Gando (Burkina Faso) with the participation of the whole community. Walls of stabilised compressed earth blocks made on site and a large raised metal roof that shades the vaulted earth ceiling and encourages cross-ventilation, keeping the classrooms cool without air conditioning. It received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004 and marks the starting point of the trajectory that led Kéré to the Pritzker 2022: local earth, climate and community.
