Satkhira, Bangladesh
A rural hospital with 80 beds in Shyamnagar (Satkhira, Bangladesh), completed in 2018 and winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 for the best building in the world. Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA resolves it with low-rise pavilions of local exposed brick, chained courtyards that ventilate and light the building naturally, and a channel running through the site collecting rainwater —a critical resource in an area with aquifers salinised by climate change— and creating a microclimate. Low-cost, low-carbon healthcare architecture of enormous material dignity.
