Tilburg, Países Bajos
Public library and cultural space in Tilburg (Netherlands), opened in 2019 within a 1932 locomotive maintenance shed that had been slated for demolition. Civic Architects, Braaksma & Roos and Inside Outside (with interiors by Mecanoo) preserved the original steel structure and building envelope, minimising new elements and embodied carbon, and added tiered seating, learning "labs" and huge textile curtains that regulate acoustics and climate. World Building of the Year 2019, it is the canonical example of adaptive reuse of industrial heritage.
