Interpretation centre for Mapungubwe National Park (Limpopo, South Africa), completed in 2009 and named World Building of the Year at that year's World Architecture Festival. Its tile vaults, calculated with John Ochsendorf (MIT) and Michael Ramage (Cambridge), were built with stabilised earth tiles made on site by unemployed local workers, with barely any formwork or steel. A centuries-old, very low-impact technique that also left a trade in the region: the bricklayers still use the tiles in their own homes.
