Daca, Bangladesh
Neighbourhood mosque in Dhaka (Bangladesh), completed in 2012 and awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2016. Marina Tabassum built a cubic volume of handmade brick on a raised plinth that protects it from flooding, with no domes or minarets: the prayer hall breathes and is lit through brick lattices, light wells and a perimeter colonnade, dispensing with air conditioning. It revives the tradition of Bengal Sultanate mosques with a contemporary language of extreme economy of means and materials.
