Ningbo, China
Municipal museum in Ningbo (China), completed in 2008 by Wang Shu and Amateur Architecture Studio. Its monumental walls were built with millions of bricks and tiles recovered from demolished villages in the region — some over a thousand years old — laid by local craftsmen using the traditional wapan technique, which binds together disparate pieces with lime joints. The building turns the rubble of accelerated Chinese urbanisation into built memory and a radical strategy of reuse. Its author received the Pritzker Prize in 2012.
