Comprehensive refurbishment of the Niu de l'Àliga refuge, built in 1966 on the summit of La Tosa (2,537 m), between La Molina and Masella, in the Cerdanya: it is the highest staffed refuge in the Eastern Pyrenees. The works, commissioned by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) with an investment of around 2.2 million euros, culminated in the reopening of the refuge in March 2026. The project preserves the distinctive original hexagonal floor plan and fully upgrades the building with energy efficiency and self-sufficiency criteria, a critical requirement in a high-mountain location with no access to utility networks: thermal cladding on the façade, new window and door frames that cut down heat loss, six-centimetre polycarbonate enclosures with eleven air chambers, and solar capture systems that make the most of the building's orientation. An impluvium extends the collection of rainwater and meltwater for reuse. Accommodation capacity increases from 30 to 72 places, establishing the refuge as a mountain facility operating year-round.
