The Tottori Takahama Café by Kengo Kuma, located facing the dunes of Tottori in Japan, uses cross-laminated timber and reinforced concrete, creating a hybrid structure that harmonises with the sandy surroundings. Inspired by the local "Mingei" tradition, the design incorporates craft elements such as laminated wood chairs and Washi paper light fittings with local sand. In addition, the ceramic washbasins were made by a local workshop, giving the space an authentic connection to the culture and nature of the place.
