Refurbishment of the former Tour & Taxis goods station in Brussels, completed in 2020 by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. Beneath the preserved historic sheds, twelve new cross-laminated timber (CLT) pavilions have been inserted to house offices and retail, forming a covered city with minimal conventional air conditioning. The combination of heritage conservation, lightweight CLT structure and renewable energy makes this a European benchmark: demolition is avoided, construction uses biogenic carbon, and operational demand is reduced.
