Residential complex in East Harlem (New York) with around 650 100% affordable homes, completed in phases up to 2023-2024 and considered the largest Passive House residential building in the world. Handel Architects applied the passive house standard to high-rise social housing: an airtight building envelope at contained cost, liquid-applied vapour barriers and heat recovery, reducing thermal demand by up to 60% compared to a conventional building. It includes a school, community spaces, retail and gardens, and is a national model for decarbonised affordable housing.
