Anandaloy

Rudrapur, Bangladesh

Two-storey community centre in Rudrapur (Bangladesh), completed in 2020 and winner of that year's Obel Award. Its name means "place of deep joy": it houses a therapy centre for people with disabilities and, upstairs, a fair-trade textile workshop for women from the village. Anna Heringer built it with earth rammed by local hands and a light bamboo structure, with a ramp embracing the curved volume. It demonstrates that mud and bamboo can produce inclusive, beautiful, near-zero-carbon architecture.
