London-based studio founded in 1995 by Alex de Rijke, Philip Marsh and Sadie Morgan, a pioneer since 2000 in the use of engineered timber as a key material for the 21st century. Their Maggie's Oldham centre (2017) was the world's first permanent building in hardwood CLT, synthesising concept, construction and user wellbeing. They also designed the reconstruction of Hastings Pier, winner of the Stirling Prize 2017, alongside works such as Trafalgar Place or Clapham Manor Primary School. Exposed timber is a hallmark of their low-carbon architecture.
Why we chose it
Because they placed engineered timber, including hardwood CLT, at the heart of award-winning, low-carbon architecture.
