British studio founded in 1997 by Andrew Waugh and Anthony Thistleton, based in Shoreditch (London) and specialising in engineered timber since 2003. In 2009 they completed Murray Grove (Stadthaus), the world's first nine-storey solid timber building, with load-bearing walls, floors and staircases in CLT, which avoided 125 tonnes of carbon and stores more than 180. They later built Dalston Works, for a time the largest CLT building in the world. Their work drove forward the international tall timber movement.
Why we chose it
Because they got tall timber construction off the ground and show, project by project, the carbon avoided compared with concrete.
