Bacteria-grown biocement: Biolith tiles with no clinker or firing, also produced in Europe.
A Durham, North Carolina-based company that grows cement using bacteria: its microorganisms precipitate calcium carbonate at room temperature, binding the aggregate without firing or clinker. Its Biolith tile, marketed in Europe as BioBasedTiles, contains approximately 85% natural aggregate and 15% biologically grown limestone, and is produced at scale in Denmark with manufacturer IBF. The process avoids the CO2 from calcination, the product contains no VOCs, and the EPD for the commercial European product is being developed.
