Lycée Schorge

Koudougou, Burkina Faso

Secondary school in Koudougou (Burkina Faso), completed in 2016. Nine classroom modules are arranged in a ring around a courtyard, with walls of locally quarried laterite stone, which is soft when carved and hardens on exposure to air, and perimeter lattices of eucalyptus wood. Sculptural wind towers draw hot air out of each classroom and, together with the thermal mass of the laterite and the cantilevered roofs, drastically reduce the indoor temperature without air conditioning. A canonical example of climate-responsive architecture using local materials.
