HARQUITECTES is an architecture studio founded in 2000 in Sabadell (Barcelona) and led by four partners: David Lorente, Josep Ricart, Xavier Ros and Roger Tudó. It has become one of the European benchmarks for environmentally conscious architecture: its buildings seek maximum comfort with the minimum amount of resources, working with thermal inertia, bioclimatic intermediate spaces, natural ventilation and low-footprint materials — ceramic, earth, timber — often left exposed. Among its most recognised works are the Cristalleries Planell civic centre and the refurbishment of Lleialtat Santsenca, both in Barcelona; for the latter they received the 2017 Barcelona City Award for Architecture and Urban Planning, while Planell was awarded at the 2017 MAPEI Awards for Sustainable Building. Back in 2013 they had already won the first A+ Award for best sustainable architecture project. Their work, widely published and awarded, shows that sustainability can be the starting point of a project rather than a technical add-on afterwards.
