Barcelona studio founded by Marta Peris and José Manuel Toral, specialising in public housing and urban space. Their best-known work is the 85 social housing units in Cornellà de Llobregat, a five-storey building with a timber structure raised above a concrete ground floor and organised around a communal courtyard. The project, known as Modulus Matrix, received the RIBA International Prize 2024 and the Premio Construmat 2024 a la Sostenibilidad (Construmat Sustainability Award), and was a finalist for the Mies van der Rohe Award. They work with timber and a matrix of equal-sized rooms as tools to reduce emissions and make domestic use more flexible.
Why we chose it
Because they show that timber social housing can be affordable, decarbonised and of the highest architectural quality, with international recognition.
